Performance Review
Sound Quality
The PRX One delivers impressive audio performance that exceeds expectations for a column array system. The 12″ subwoofer provides substantial low-end response, producing tight, defined bass that works well for both music playback and live instruments. The column array creates wide horizontal coverage while controlling vertical dispersion, resulting in even sound distribution throughout typical venues.
Vocal reproduction is particularly impressive, with excellent clarity and detail in the mid-range that allows singers to cut through the mix without harshness with a few adjustments. The high-frequency response is articulate without being fatiguing, providing the necessary “air” and detail for acoustic instruments and percussion. Like most PA speakers it has a bit of harshness around 2k that needs to be adjusted.
There is a little less low mid range that is standard on a standard PA speaker with a 10,12 or 15″ + Horn, though it can be mostly adjusted for using the master EQ. I set it up next to my QSC K10s and with a few adjustments it sounded fairly similar.
At higher volume levels, the PRX One maintains its composure remarkably well. The internal limiters prevent distortion while allowing the system to deliver substantial output. While it can’t match the raw power of larger conventional PA systems, it provides more than enough volume for small to medium venues, outdoor events, and corporate functions.
User Experience
Setup is straightforward and can be accomplished in minutes. It takes me 10mins to setup and take down after the gig. The modular design allows for quick assembly, with the column sections connecting securely to the base. The built-in mixer is intuitive with logical control grouping and clear visual feedback via the LCD display.
The Bluetooth control app extends functionality significantly, allowing users to adjust mix parameters and effects settings from anywhere in the venue. This feature is particularly valuable during sound check, enabling precise adjustments from the audience perspective.
The multiple EQ presets provide excellent starting points for different applications, though experienced users will appreciate the ability to save custom settings for recurring events. The feedback suppression works effectively in challenging acoustic environments, identifying and reducing problematic frequencies before they become disruptive.
Build Quality and Reliability
JBL’s reputation for durability is upheld in the PRX One. The components feel substantial, with robust connection points between the column sections and base. The control surface is well-protected, and the input section is designed to withstand the rigors of frequent setup and teardown.
The cooling system manages heat efficiently, even during extended operation at higher volumes. Protection circuits monitor system performance and prevent damage in extreme conditions without being overly cautious or limiting normal operation.
Versatility
The PRX One excels in versatility, adapting well to various applications from solo performers to small bands, DJ setups, corporate presentations, and houses of worship. The comprehensive input section accommodates most typical source requirements, while the effects engine eliminates the need for external processing in many scenarios.
For larger events, the system integrates well with additional PRX units or subwoofers via the XLR outputs. The Bluetooth streaming capability also proves useful for break music or backing tracks, though serious performers will likely prefer hardwired connections for critical applications.
Room For Improvement
No system is perfect and I’m quite happy with the PRX One after 50 gigs. But below is a list of issues and improvement I think would make this PA a lot better.
Thee seems to be a gap in frequencies between the speaker tower and the sub that comes in at 160hz or below. This gives the system a non optimal response around 200 to 400Hz.
The sub could actually be smaller for acoustic live performers that don’t need much below 80Hz.
The app reliability needs to be improved. Updates seem to often cause issues.
Reverb quality seems to be an issue, it just doesn’t sound as good as my other professional units.
The lip around the top of the sub seems to be made to channel any liquid into the mixer.
Better control and separation of the aux out specifically for monitor use.
I’d also like to see a system with larger tower speakers for better lower mids.
Value
While positioned in the premium segment of the portable column array market, the PRX One justifies its price with convenience, good sound quality, build construction, and feature set. Compared to assembling a separate mixer, speakers, stands, and effects units of comparable quality, the all-in-one solution represents reasonable value while significantly reducing setup time and complexity.
Conclusion
The JBL PRX One stands as an impressive achievement in portable sound reinforcement. It successfully bridges the gap between convenience and professional performance, delivering substantial output, excellent sound quality, and intuitive operation in a package that one person can transport and set up. While it won’t replace conventional line arrays for large venues, it provides a compelling solution for the vast majority of small to medium events and performances.
For working musicians, mobile DJs, corporate AV providers, and houses of worship seeking high-quality portable sound, the PRX One represents one of the most complete and capable solutions available. Its combination of acoustic performance, mixer functionality, effects processing, and robust construction makes it a standout option in an increasingly crowded market.
